League of Legends: Allen’s Complete Guide on Jax

Hello everybody, and welcome to my guide on Jax, the Grandmaster at Arms. For anyone who has played earlier, Jax was one of the most powerful champions available, and can still be after Riot reworked him. Now on to the abilities.

Abilities

Jax’s passive ability is Relentless Assault.Every time Jax performs an autoattack, he gains 4 / 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 14 % attack speed. This buff lasts for 2.5 seconds and stacks up to 6 times. This makes him a decent jungler, and great with lifesteal.

Relentless Assault

His Q ability is leap strike. Jax leaps towards a target, dealing physical damage if the target is an enemy. Leveling this up would increase the damage and decreasing the cooldown. The damage increases by AP as well as your AD. Not only can it damage enemies, but also use it to escape by jumping on a minion or a ward.

Leap Strike

His W ability is Empower. Jax charges his weapon with energy, causing his next autoattack or Leap Strike to deal additional magic damage. This ability resets the autoattack timer. Leveling will decrease cooldown and increase damage. This ability improves on AP. Make sure to use this smartly, as the right moment can give you two attacks for one.

His E ability is Counter Strike. Jax enters a defensive stance for up to 2 seconds, dodging all incoming basic attacks and taking 25% less damage from area of effect abilities. At the end of the duration or if Counter Strike is activated again, Jax deals physical damage and stuns nearby enemies for 1 second. This spell deals 20% additional damage for each attack dodged to a maximum of 100% increased damage. Leveling would increase magic damage, the maximum damage, mana increases, and the cooldown is decreased. AD would benefit this ability damage. This is a great counter when dueling with champs like Tryndamere, as well as escaping.

Counter Strike

His Ultimate contains two parts. With his passive, Jax deals additional magic damage on every third basic attack. The counter will reset if he does not attack for 2.5 seconds. When activated, he gains additional armor and magic resist. This and his E makes him a great duelist, and can farm creeps easily too.

Grandmaster

Runes & Masteries & Summoners

Marks: Attack Damage

Seal: Flat Armor

Glyphs: Flat Magic Resist

Quints: Attack Damage

This is common setup for any top lane bruiser, as it gives you tanky stats and good damage. Attack damage is better on Armor Penetration on Jax.

Jax benefits most with 9-21-0 masteries, as the rest of the offensive tree is somewhat useless. Champs like GP would go 21-9-0 for additional armor pen and crit.

This pair is the best. Exhaust or teleport instead of ignite.

Items

Starting

boots-of-speedx1(350) and health-potion3x3(125)

This would mostly be the one you would get, get cloth armor if you think you will get trashed early or camped by the jungler.

MID GAME

dorans-bladex2(950)bilgewater-cutlassx1(1825)

mercurys-treadsx1(1200) OR ninja-tabix1(850)

Dorans Blades will give you the most sustain and health in lane. Bilgewater also adds to the damage and the lifesteal. Get Mercs or Tabis depending on situation, AP/CC heavy vs. AD heavy.

FINISHING ITEMS

hextech-gunbladex1(3625)trinity-forcex1(4070)guardian-angelx1(2600)banshees-veilx1(2715)

After Bilgewater, then get your trinity. You may not want to finish your Gunblade until you get your GA. After Gunblade, either get tankier with MR by getting Banshees or a Force of Nature. Get Randuin’s for Armor and Frozen Heart for the mana, CDR, and even more armor. Warmogs for ridiculous health and survivability.

Laning

In the early game, get your regular starting items and guard your jungle by sitting at your side of the tri-bush. When the minions come out, start last hitting as usual. Once you pushed your lane past out your side of the map, be cautious for their junglers, especially those that are capable of lvl 2 ganks, like Shyvana and Mundo. You can recall if you are low, but if you dont’t then wait until you can get 2 dorans as well as a ward. You should put the ward right where there jungle ends at the river, across from baron. Usually the jungler would come here to gank you, and that should warn you. Harass our opponent with Leap strike and unleash a full E>Q>auto attack>W combo on to him with an ignite for the kill. Make sure you activate W right after an auto attack for 2hits in one.

Now in the game you should have your items, and building into a Trinity. Make sure to watch out for the dragon fights. If you aren’t in position, then push your lane and hopefully get a tower. In the end towers are better than dragons, as you’re opponents control of their jungle weakens. In team fights, rely on your leap to attack the carries, and using E is great for group cc.

You should have your Trinity and GA, which means you can be even more powerful in jumping into the enemy and unleashing your burst damage. Remember the ward jump is useful when your team melts, as Jax doesn’t have much escape tools.

All in all, Jax is a great champ and one of the best duelists in the game.

  1. Tankier? Wow, Allen, you have expanded my vocabulary although I admit I have NO IDEA what this (or many other terms in this write up) mean!

    • Hi Ms. Janine. Yes though games use the common languages, there are certain types of vocabulary that has been adapted just for games, like “tankier” and “split-push”.
