London Olympics 2012: Day 5

Allison Schmitt’s dominating final leg in the women’s relay helped the US team(Missy Franklin, Dana Volmer, Shannon Vreeland, and Allison Schmitt take gold. Both Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps advance into the 200meter medley, with Lochte taking first and Phelps a close second. Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta took gold and set a new world record for the men’s 200meter breaststroke, Great Britain takes silver and Japan takes Bronze.

A scandal stunned Day 5, as 8 badminton players were disqualified for trying to throw games to get favorable picks the next round. They were punished for trying to intentionally lose their match.

Serena Williams advances to the quarterfinals, but Venus falls in her third round match to Angelique Kerber of Germany.
