London Olympics 2012: Day 1

Hello everybody. As you may know, the Olympics have started in London. Everyday I will be doing summaries of each day. Obviously with so many events going on each day, I will only be able to cover some. I will start off with Day 1.

Probably the most anticipated event that day was the men’s 400IM. The match pitted the winner of 8 gold medals in Beijing, Michael Phelps facing Ryan Lochte. Throughout the event, Lochte dominated and claimed gold. Thiago Pereira of Brazil claimed Silver and Kosuke Haguno of Japan got Bronze. Michael Phelps came in on a close 4th. This was Phelp’s first event where he did not reach the podium.

Now we move on to men’s gymnastics, where outstanding performances by team USA and Great Britain put them ahead of the Chinese and Japanese teams. The China team was missing star performer Teng Haibin, when he was injured. He is replaced by Guo Weiyang, who did not perform as well.

In beach volleyball, the undefeated team of Misty May/Kerri Walsh of USA defeat the team of Natalie Cook and Tamsin Hinchley. It was a close match and a good performance by the Australians, but the Americans remain undefeated.

Ilka Semmler of Germany jumps for a spike against Hana Klapalova of Cyech Republic during the Women's Beach Volleyball match between Germany and Czech Republic on Day 1 of the London 2012 Olympic Games at Horse Guards Parade on July 28, 2012 in London, England.
